March 24: Cusco

By Vergena

We woke up early at around 3 am so that we could catch our plane for Cusco at 6 am. We were very tired and took a nap in the plane. Arriving in Cusco was beautiful, we were flying above the mountain and the town is almost at the top of the mountain. We took a taxi to our hotel. Some students were shocked that we had to carry the bags up the steep hill and many steps to get to the top of the hotel.

We spent the day looking around town. The town is beautiful. There are a lot of Spanish colonial buildings and the plaza has two big old beautiful churches.  We stopped by the markets and relaxed at the Plaza de Armas. Scott explained to us that the leader of the indigenous uprising was beheaded here in 1781.

We visited the Museo Inka to learn more about history in this area and saw different artifacts.

We also learned more about the story of the sun king and how this town and village of the Incas were created. This area was discovered with a gold staff (walking pole) and it sunk into the earth and that was where they decided that Cusco was the place for the Incas.
