March 18: Paris

Bienvenue à Paris!
 by Scott Mohan (Chaperone)

On the bus... where's our hotel?
Heavy fog welcomed us weary travelers who arrived all the way from the Land of Enchantment! Upon arrival, the students began to immediately look for the Eiffel tower and blamed the fog for not being able to see it .  The chaperones told the kids that the airport was far out of town to see it ;)

We had an unexpected travel adventure lined up for our group. We had planned to take the Metro rail directly to the hotel and this is a common form of travel for Parisians. The students enjoyed the ride into town and when we were approaching our hotel, we were informed that there was some work being done nearby and they closed up our hotel's Metro stop! Seasoned travelers know that we have to expect the unexpected and we were forced to have to think of quick solutions. We asked an attendant and they told us to take a bus. So off we went to take the city bus with all of our bags and what felt like everyone from Paris was on the bus with us.  We came to the end of that bus line and realized we were going in the wrong direction!  We hopped on the next bus going in the opposite direction. The up side of this whole experience was that we saw many things on the way and it was wonderful that the students got to experience true Parisian living; use public transportation to go to work, go shopping, or to have some fun!.

Our hotel welcomed us and we checked into our rooms. Our hotel is in a nice quiet neighborhood and very close to the Metro station (we were able to use it later when it opened).

The Arc d' Triomphe
In order to keep everyone awake and to beat jet lag, we went out for a walk and saw the Arc de Triomphe.  The Arc de Triomphe (The Arc of Triumph) honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and the Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.

Paris is 7 hours ahead of Santa Fe. Dinner at 6:30 pm feels like dinner at 1:30 am!

We ended our first night with a great dinner at the corner café where several of us were dozing off. We managed to capture a picture of Alexandro dozing off at the table ;)

Tomorrow, we have a full day ahead of us!
